A Year Closed in Gratitude.
At Akaraiwe & Associates (Lex Rehoboth Partners), the close of every legal year is more than a pause in the court calendar. It is a moment of reckoning and of thanksgiving — an opportunity to look back on the matters we have prosecuted and defended, the clients we have served, the young minds we have trained, and above all, to acknowledge the faithfulness of God through it all.
As the courts prepared to rise for the Annual Court Vacation, the Firm gathered for its End of Legal Year Thanksgiving and Externs’ Sendforth a celebration of another year of impactful legal practice, and a fitting send-off for the externs who completed their placement with us.
The occasion was marked by thanksgiving prayers, reflections from members of the Firm, the presentation of certificates, fellowship, and moments of genuine celebration. It was, in every sense, a family affair.
A Word from a Daughter of the House
We were especially privileged to welcome Mrs. Ifeoma Adaghara, Principal Partner of Gracefield Attorneys and former Head of Chambers at our Firm, as our guest speaker.
Her address was a challenge as much as it was an encouragement. Speaking to a room of young lawyers and law students at the very beginning of their journey, she spoke on the four things that sustain a career at the Bar: excellence in the work one puts one’s name to, integrity that holds firm when no one is watching, continuous learning in a profession where the law never stands still, and purpose the conviction that legal practice is a calling and not merely a livelihood.
That the message came from someone who once sat where our externs now sit, and who has since built a practice of her own, gave it a weight no ordinary address could carry.
Mentorship Is Not an Event It Is a Culture
Great lawyers are shaped by great mentors. Few of us arrive at competence alone; we arrive there because someone senior took the trouble to correct our processes, mark up our drafts, take us to court, and tell us the truth about our work.
At Akaraiwe & Associates, mentorship is not a ceremony we observe once a year. It is woven into how the Firm operates. Every extern who passes through our doors is encouraged to think critically, to act ethically, and to develop the confidence that modern legal practice demands whether in the courtroom, across a negotiating table, or in the quiet discipline of drafting.
The future of the legal profession in Nigeria will be determined, in large part, by how intentionally we prepare today’s young lawyers. That is a responsibility we take seriously.
Celebrating Achievement, Encouraging Potential
One of the highlights of the celebration was the presentation of Certificates of Externship.
Each certificate represents weeks of learning, practical exposure and personal growth hours in chambers, days in court, research assignments, drafting exercises, and the steady accumulation of the practical judgment that no classroom can fully supply.
We congratulate every extern, and we thank them for the professionalism, curiosity and diligence they brought to the Firm throughout their time with us. To our externs: thank you for being part of our journey. We wish you every success as you continue your legal education, and we look forward to watching your journeys unfold within the profession.
